A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to visit this American plane that crashed on the southwest coast of Iceland. It was November 24, 1973, when a fuel leak was detected on the Super DC-3 while flying over an area near the town of Vík. The pilot spotted a beach several kilometers wide, where he made an emergency landing. No one lost their life, but the plane was destroyed under a layer of snow and volcanic sand. If anything surprised us about Iceland, it's the immensity of its lava and sand deserts. Imagine what the crew of this plane felt when they landed in a place like this in 1973 (when there was still no tourism). Now it's part of the landscape; the fuselage of this plane lies a couple of kilometers from the Ring Road. It's a long and solitary walk that I highly recommend doing on foot, simply to put yourself in the shoes of the American soldiers who were traveling on that plane.
